Create an agent
Create an agent in the Agent Builder. Choose Automated to have AI Studio draft the agent from a short description, or Manual to set up each part yourself.
Before you start
- Make sure the model you want is configured. See Models.
- To give the agent tools, set up the MCP connectors first. See MCP Builder.
Agent name rules
Agent Name can use letters, numbers, underscores and hyphens only, with no spaces or special characters. It can be up to 50 characters long, and must not already be used by another agent.
Create an agent automatically
- On the Agents screen, select Create Agent. The Agent Builder opens.
- Select Automated.
- In Agent Name, enter a name, for example
Customer_Support_Agent. - In Industry / Area, select the closest match, or leave it as Other.
- In Description, describe what the agent should do, its purpose and who will use it.
- Choose the model. Select a Source, then a Provider, then a Model. Adjust Temperature if needed.
- In Tone / Personality, select a tone. Professional is the default.
- Optional: under Tools & Integrations, select + Add MCP to add tools. See Add tools to an agent.
- Under Visibility, select Org so anyone in your account can use the agent, or Private so only you can see and use it.
- Optional: add Tags, select Choose avatar, and attach knowledge bases.
- Select Generate Agent Configuration.
- Check the generated configuration on the review step. Select Back to Inputs to make changes.
- Select Create Agent, or select Save as Draft to finish later.
Create an agent manually
The manual builder has four steps: Persona, Mission, Brain and Review & Create.
- On the Agents screen, select Create Agent.
- Select Manual.
- On the Persona step, enter the Agent Name and a Description of up to 180 characters. Optionally set Personality, Persona Name, Persona Description and an avatar.
- On the Mission step, enter the System Prompt that defines how the agent behaves.
- Optional: select + Add Goal to add goals and + Add Guardrail to add guardrails. An agent can have up to 10 of each.
- Optional: enter a Welcome Message to show when a user starts a conversation.
- On the Brain step, select a Source, Provider and Model. Higher temperature gives more creative responses. Lower temperature gives more focused responses.
- Optional: add tools under Tools & Integrations, and attach knowledge bases.
- On the Review & Create step, check the details. Select Previous to go back.
- Select Create Agent, or select Save as Draft to finish later.
Select Cancel at any time to go back to the Agents list without saving.
Add tools to an agent
- Under Tools & Integrations, select + Add MCP. The MCP Connectors dialog opens.
- Type in Search connectors or tools... to find a connector.
- Select the tools you want. Use Select all or Deselect all on a connector to pick all of its tools at once.
- Select Done.
Attach knowledge bases
In the knowledge base dialog, select Select KB on each knowledge base you want. Attachments are saved when you create the agent. Closing the dialog does not save them.
What happens next
The message Agent created successfully. appears and the agent is added to the list. A new agent starts as Draft. Enable it to use it in chats. See Enable, disable or delete an agent.
