Work with MCP tools
The tool editor shows each tool in an MCP. Use it to try a tool, change its settings, or add tools.
Open the tool editor
- In MCP Builder, select an MCP's name. The tool editor opens on its first tool.
- In the side panel, select another tool, or type in Search MCPs or tools... to find one.
If you can only view the MCP, you can change fields and select Execute to try a request, but your changes are not saved.
Try a tool
- Open the tool.
- Fill in its parameters.
- Select Execute.
The Response card shows whether the call worked, the HTTP status and how long it took. Switch between the response tabs, such as Pretty, Raw and Headers, and use Search response... to search the result.
Change a tool
- Open the tool.
- Change Method, Path, Description or Prompt. The prompt tells an agent how to use the tool.
- Use the configuration tabs:
- Params: the tool's parameters. Select + Add Parameter to add one.
- Body: the body template, for POST, PUT and PATCH methods.
- Transform: an expression that reshapes the response. Leave it blank to return the raw response.
- Pagination: how results are paged.
- Select Update Tool.
Get AI suggestions
- Open the tool.
- Select Suggest with AI. The AI Suggestions dialog opens.
- Tick the suggested values you want to use for the description, prompt and response transform.
- Select Apply Selected, or Discard to ignore them.
Add a tool
- In the side panel, select Add Tool.
- Enter a Tool Name, Method and Path.
- Fill in the other fields as needed.
- Select Save Tool.
Delete a tool
- Open the tool.
- Select Delete.
- Confirm in the Delete tool dialog. This removes the tool from the MCP and can't be undone.
Troubleshooting
- Missing required parameter(s): names: fill in the named parameters, then select Execute again.
- AI suggestion failed. Please try again. try again.
- Build Dashboard, Suggest with AI, Update Tool and Delete are missing: you can only view this MCP.
