Manage policies

Monitoring policies tell your monitoring points what to test: a network path, a web page, an HTTP endpoint, or a mix. Use ManageIT → Manage Policies to view and maintain the AppNeta monitoring policies for your account.

Before you start

  • Your account must be connected to AppNeta. If it isn't, the screen shows AppNeta is not configured for this account.
  • To choose where a policy runs, you need monitoring points. See Manage monitoring points.

The policies list

The Policies panel shows every monitoring policy with a count of the total.

  • Tile view and List view switch between cards and a table.
  • The sort list orders policies by Name A → Z, Target A → Z or Status.
  • Search policies… filters the list.

Each tile shows the policy's Target, Type and Status. List view shows Policy Name, Target, Type, Status and Actions. A policy's status is Enabled or Disabled.

In list view, choose how many rows to show with Per page (10, 25 or 50). Use the page buttons to move through the list.

Create a policy

Creating a policy is a four-step wizard: Target, Monitoring, Points and Review. Use Next and Back to move between steps, or Cancel to leave without saving.

  1. Go to ManageIT → Manage Policies.
  2. Select Add Policy.

Step 1: Target

  1. Under Target Information, enter the Target: an IP address, hostname, or full URL.
  2. Enter a Policy Name of 3 to 100 characters.
  3. Optionally, pick one or more Tags.
  4. Optionally, enter a Description of up to 500 characters.
  5. Optionally, start typing in Target Location and pick a location from the suggestions.
  6. Optionally, open Advanced Settings and select:
    • Enable data deletion for paths inactive 7+ days
    • Auto-generate network route tags
  7. Select Next.

Step 2: Monitoring

Network Monitoring is required. It measures network path, latency and packet loss.

  1. Choose a Protocol: TCP, ICMP or UDP.
  2. To monitor both directions, select Enable dual-ended (asymmetric) monitoring. Dual-ended monitoring needs UDP.
  3. Set the network options you need:
    • Network Path Group
    • Target Type: Auto or Voice. Only Auto is available for TCP and ICMP.
    • Network Type: WAN or LAN.
    • VoIP Codec
    • Importance
    • QoS Settings
    • TCP Port (for TCP) or UDP Port and UDP Source Port (for UDP).
  4. Under Alert Profile, choose a Time Range and a Network Alert Profile.

Web/HTTP Monitoring is optional. It measures web application response times and availability.

  1. Select Enable.
  2. Choose Browser or HTTP Request.
  3. For Browser, set:
    • URL, Timeout (seconds), Interval (minutes) and Alert Profile.
    • Ignore SSL certificate errors, if needed.
    • Under Browser Advanced Options: APDEX Satisfied (sec), APDEX Tolerated (sec), HTTP Auth Username and HTTP Auth Password.
  4. For HTTP Request, set:
    • URL and HTTP Method (GET, POST, PUT, DELETE, PATCH or HEAD).
    • Expected Status Code and, optionally, Expected Response Body.
    • Frequency (seconds), Alert Profile and Time Range.
    • Verify SSL Certificate, if needed.
  5. If the target is behind a proxy, open Proxy Settings, select Use Proxy, and set Proxy Type, Proxy URL, Proxy Username and Proxy Password.
  6. Select Next.

Step 3: Points

Rules decide which monitoring points run the policy. If you add no rules, the policy runs from all your monitoring points.

  1. Select Add Rule.
  2. Under Monitoring Point Selection, narrow the points with any of these filters:
    • Monitoring Point Name
    • Monitoring Point Type: Physical, Virtual or Software.
    • Country and Region.
    • Subnet, Connection Type (Wired or Wireless) and VLAN.
  3. Add more rules if you need them. The counter shows how many rules and filters you have.
  4. Select Next.

Step 4: Review

  1. Under Review & Enable, check the Target, Monitoring and Monitoring Points summaries. Select Edit next to a section to go back to it.
  2. Select Enable this policy immediately to start monitoring as soon as you save.
  3. Select Create Policy.

Edit a policy

  1. Go to ManageIT → Manage Policies.
  2. Select the policy name, or select Edit on its tile or row.
  3. Work through the wizard steps and change what you need.
  4. On the Review step, select Save Changes.

Delete a policy

  1. Go to ManageIT → Manage Policies.
  2. Select Delete on the policy's tile or row.
  3. In Delete Policy, select Delete.

The policy is permanently removed from AppNeta. You can't undo it.

What happens next

After you save, you return to the policies list and see your policy there. Enabled policies start running from the monitoring points you chose.
