Manage policy groups
A policy group bundles several monitoring policies so they share the same monitoring settings and run from the same monitoring points. Use ManageIT → Manage Policy Groups to view and maintain the AppNeta policy groups for your account.
Before you start
- Your account must be connected to AppNeta. If it isn't, the screen shows AppNeta is not configured for this account.
- To learn about single policies, see Manage policies.
The policy groups list
The Policy Groups panel shows every group with a count of the total.
- Tile view and List view switch between cards and a table.
- The sort list orders groups by Name A → Z, Status or Policy Count.
- Search groups… filters the list.
Each tile shows the group's Policies, Status and Description. List view shows Group Name, # Policies, Status, Description and Actions. A group's status is Enabled or Disabled.
In list view, choose how many rows to show with Per page (10, 25 or 50). Use the page buttons to move through the list.
Create a policy group
Creating a group is a five-step wizard: Basic, Policies, Monitoring, Points and Review. Use Next and Back to move between steps, or Cancel to leave without saving.
- Go to ManageIT → Manage Policy Groups.
- Select Add Group.
Step 1: Basic
- Under Group Information, enter a Group Name.
- Optionally, enter a Description of what the group monitors.
- Select or clear Enabled.
- Select Next.
Step 2: Policies
Add at least one policy to the group.
- Select Add Policy. A side panel opens.
- Enter the Target: an IP address, FQDN or URL.
- Enter a Policy Name.
- Optionally, pick Tags and a Target Location.
- Under Monitoring, choose Enable or Disable. Monitoring preferences come from the group settings in the next step.
- Select Save Policy.
- Repeat for each policy you want in the group. Use Search policies… to find one in the list.
- Select Next.
To change a policy you added, select Edit policy in its row. To take it out of the group, select Remove policy.
Step 3: Monitoring
These settings apply to every policy in the group.
- Under Network Monitoring, choose a Protocol: TCP, ICMP or UDP.
- To monitor both directions, select Enable dual-ended (asymmetric) monitoring. Dual-ended monitoring needs UDP.
- Set the network options you need:
- Network Path Group
- Target Type: Auto or Voice. Only Auto is available for TCP and ICMP.
- Network Type: WAN or LAN.
- VoIP Codec
- Importance
- QoS Settings
- TCP Port (for TCP) or UDP Port and UDP Source Port (for UDP).
- Under Alert Profile, choose a Time Range and a Network Alert Profile.
- Optionally, select Web/HTTP Monitoring to monitor web application response times and availability.
- Optionally, under Web Proxy, choose a Proxy Type (HTTP, SOCKS or PAC) and enter the Proxy URL.
- Select Next.
Step 4: Points
Monitoring Point Rules decide which monitoring points run the group's policies. If you add no rules, the group runs from all your monitoring points.
- In a rule card, under Monitoring Point Selection, narrow the points with any of these filters:
- Monitoring Point Name
- Monitoring Point Type: Physical, Virtual or Software.
- City, County, State, Country and Region.
- Under Network Rules, optionally set Interface Name, Connection Type (Wired or Wireless), Subnet and VLAN.
- Select Add Rule to add another rule, or Remove rule to delete one.
- Select Next.
Step 5: Review
- Under Review & Submit, check the Group Info, Policies, Monitoring Settings and Monitoring Point Rules summaries. Select Edit next to a section to go back to it.
- Optionally, open Advanced Settings and choose Enable data deletion and Auto-generate network rule tags.
- Select or clear Enable this policy group.
- Select Create Group.
Edit a policy group
- Go to ManageIT → Manage Policy Groups.
- Select the group name, or select Edit on its tile or row.
- Work through the wizard steps and change what you need.
- On the last step, select Save Changes.
Delete a policy group
- Go to ManageIT → Manage Policy Groups.
- Select Delete on the group's tile or row.
- In Delete Policy Group, select Delete.
The group and its policy associations are permanently removed from AppNeta. You can't undo it.
What happens next
After you save, you return to the policy groups list and see your group there. After a delete, the list shows Policy group deleted.
