What is the RPI Score?

The Reliability Path Index (RPI) is a thirteen-bucket reliability model that quantifies risk using a unique scale inspired by radiation exposure (Sieverts), with lower values indicating higher resilience.

You see the RPI Score in My Observability, broken down by the buckets below. In ScoutIT AI, open LearnIT → What is RPI? for an interactive version of this guide.

The thirteen buckets

Each bucket measures one kind of reliability signal.

BucketWhat it measures
Network WobbleMeasures network stability and jitter. Tracks packet loss, latency variance, and path inconsistencies that affect user experience and application performance.
Application LagTracks application response delays and processing bottlenecks. Monitors slow transactions, delayed renders, and backend processing inefficiencies that impact user experience.
Browser InefficiencyMeasures client-side performance issues. Tracks DOM rendering delays, JavaScript execution time, browser compatibility issues, and front-end resource loading inefficiencies.
Total Path LossQuantifies end-to-end transaction failures across the entire path. Monitors dropped connections, incomplete requests, and lost data packets throughout the infrastructure stack.
Method InstabilityTracks API and method-level reliability issues. Monitors function call failures, API endpoint instability, microservice communication errors, and method execution inconsistencies.
System Log ChatterMeasures abnormal system logging activity and noise. Tracks excessive log generation, warning spikes, and system event anomalies that indicate underlying issues.
Transit LatencyQuantifies end-to-end network delays. Monitors response times across network hops, geographic distances, and infrastructure components.
Infrastructure IndexMeasures overall infrastructure health and capacity. Tracks hardware reliability, virtualization efficiency, container orchestration performance, and cloud resource availability.
OS Reach IndexMonitors operating system accessibility and reachability. Tracks OS-level connectivity, service availability, and system responsiveness across distributed environments.
OS Error IndexCaptures operating system-level errors and exceptions. Monitors kernel errors, system crashes, driver failures, and OS-specific performance degradation.
Applog ChatterMonitors application log volume and anomalies. Tracks error log spikes, debug message floods, and application-level logging patterns that signal performance or stability issues.
Experience FailuresCaptures user-facing errors and degraded experiences. Tracks failed transactions, broken workflows, and user frustration indicators.
Experience DegradationAggregates alerts and incidents across multiple domains. Monitors cascading failures, cross-system correlation of events, and multi-tier infrastructure alarm patterns.

Score colour bands

In My Observability and MSP Observability, each score is shown on a scale up to 100, coloured by band. Select the RPI color guide icon in My Observability to see the bands on screen.

ColourBandScore range
GreenHealthy98.00 to 100.00
AmberWarning95.00 to 97.99
RedCriticalBelow 95.00

An item scoring below 98.00 counts as At Risk in the My Observability summary.

Where the buckets appear

  • The Deduction Index panel in My Observability lists the buckets and how much each one deducts in the selected window.
  • When you expand a row in My Observability, each breakdown shows the buckets affecting it.
  • Alert policies can watch the RPI Score and each bucket as a monitor type. See Manage alert policies.
